From Airports to HR: Meet Doug Strachan

June 20, 2024
Doug Strachan

Doug Strachan is a Management Analyst specializing in HRIS (Human Resources Information Systems) administration with a rich background in managing innovation at one of the world’s busiest airports, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL). His journey to his current role is a testament to his adaptability, continuous learning, and passion for improvement.

A Journey from Aviation to HRIS

Doug’s early career led him to the dynamic environment of ATL, where he spearheaded numerous projects aimed at enhancing the passenger experience and operational efficiency. Notable among these were the RNAV project for reducing annoyance with aircraft noise and operations and TruckPass, a pioneering dock-traffic-control system. These projects not only delivered significant improvements in service delivery but also ignited Doug’s appetite for continuous improvement.

Upon retiring from his airport role, Doug transitioned into the HR field, leveraging his extensive experience on Atlanta’s pension board. This role provided him with valuable insights into HR operations and reinforced his belief in the applicability of Lean and Six Sigma principles in HR.

Innovating with TruckPass

One of Doug’s hallmark projects was the development of TruckPass, designed to mitigate truck congestion at ATL’s cargo docks. Through keen observation, customer interviews, and Gemba walks, Doug identified the need for a dock traffic control system, like air traffic control but for trucks. His innovative solution streamlined the process, reducing wait times and improving efficiency.

The implementation of TruckPass faced internal resistance, but Doug’s persistence and data-driven approach won senior leadership’s support. Today, TruckPass stands as a testament to Doug’s ability to drive change and improve operational efficiency.

The Power of Collaboration

Another project Doug was instrumental in during his time at ATL was the Parking Lot Lighting Throwdown. His success with this project underscores the importance of collaboration. By involving key stakeholders from various departments early in the process, Doug ensured the project’s success. The Throwdown allowed for a real-time comparison of lighting solutions, leading to increased lighting efficiency, cost savings, and multiple awards.

Learning from Setbacks

Doug’s career is also marked by valuable lessons learned from setbacks. In one instance, after seeing a less-developed solution presented to senior leadership, Doug’s comprehensive proposal was initially sidelined. However, his patience and professionalism paid off when his solution was ultimately recognized and approved, highlighting his resilience and strategic thinking.

A Passion for Lean

Doug’s passion for Lean principles is deeply rooted, influenced by his father, an industrial engineer, and his own professional experiences. He views the elimination of waste as a path to increased revenue and customer satisfaction. Books like Gemba Kaizen and Toyota Production System have been instrumental in shaping his approach to continuous improvement.

Life Beyond Work

Outside of his professional endeavors, Doug is a dedicated family man who cherishes time with his loved ones and watching his daughter grow. He is an active volunteer, an avid runner, and enjoys the occasional great movie.
